Given how subtle Tat's been, he's probably gonna have Sleaze call Monique a swerf by the end of this arc ._.

yeah seriously

I'd recommend Tat read some stuff by Dr Brooke Magnanti (also known as Belle du Jour) so he can see modern discussions about sexuality, not old rehashed "Women must be protected from themselves and all sex work is inherently exploitative because men aren't ever sex workers and women don't ever buy or use porn so it's only a rehashing of the patriarchy also no-one would ever choose to be ~deflowered~ so frequently"

Here's a recent tweet she posted:

Give money to sex workers' rights if you want to change the conversation around how porn is made, what it contains, and what & who it does and does not include.

one person I follow on twitter, she became a sex worker (camgirl) b/c she wanted to better understand what their struggles are. Maybe Tat should do the same.

For Slick's sake, I hope 'Nique sees the horns and tail and wonders why there's a devil-boy who looks almost exactly like her old friend Slick. And that she doesn't just hit him upside the head with the sign.

dumb semantic aside i'm pretty sure you can only be deflowered once unless someone knows something we don't.

I'm just going to wait to see where this goes, to see if we're finally going to get a story that someone can tell the difference between Sleaze and Slick or if it's just going to be a case of ambiguous convenience.

Hey, so a little off topic but if Sinfest ever became an animated series what do you think it would be like?

On note of the comic, this could be a set of for character development... hopefully Confused

No, because there is no such thing as SWERF. There is such a thing as "commoditization of women and girls' bodies exclusionary radical feminism" and "pimps and johns exclusionary radical feminism". Or, you know, just call it "feminism". Sex work is an absurd term--it isn't work, it's exploitation. Prostituted women and girls, whether exploited by the threat of physical or emotional violence from a particular person, or the general threat of violence from a society that is not providing them another option for survival, deserve protection. The industry that profits from their exploitation does not.

Isn't that cute. He's trying to mock the notion that women should be able to have sex with whoever they want for whatever reason they choose...

How exactly is this feminism again?

So...you don't think women should have the right to choose what they do with their bodies. Gotcha. Slut shame away, oh champion of women's non-rights!

It's funny how I feel like Sleaze is supposed to be a stand in for commenters like me, who have called out SWERF tendencies in Sinfest before, but it doesn't really work because people like Sleaze actually exist and yeah, they're shitty.

I'm honestly not sure why Tat keeps trying to make points about Sex work when the world they live in is so bizarrely different from ours. But still, the comic gives enough to work the opposing conclusion out of.

Going by the two assumptions that Sinfest clearly operates under:
1: Sex workers are people with agency, and the reason sex work is bad is due to the harm it does them
- They are unable to stop abusive clients and in general unable to set boundaries for the conditions under which they work
- They are financially exploited by their employers
2: Sex workers in the world of Sinfest are stuck not because they are physically locked up, but because other barriers keep them from other ways of living they prefer.

I need to state assumption 1 because it is not at all something that is true historically of movements attempting to end prostitution. The Nordic model for example, has eradicating prostitution as its stated goal, and when questioned the people responsible for implementing it made clear that the suffering of sex workers caused by that system is a feature of said system, not a bug.

Decriminalization on the other hand, aims to put leverage into the sex workers corner. Decriminalization doesn't mean everything is legal, it means that regular laws concerning transactions, businesses and employee rights work for sex workers just like they do for other people.

If all sex working/ visiting sex workers is illegal, then sex workers will never get the cops involved (this goes doubly so if cops are allowed to seize sex workers money as part of raids or investigations), leaving them unable to seek justice when they are abused.
Instead, the ability to work in groups, and to pay for a driver or bouncer, as well as the ability to communicate the details of what the sex will entail are things that keep sex workers safe and able to work on their own terms.

But what about the people who don't want to do sex work? Well making sex work illegal surely won't make things easier for them. If they have a debt they needed to pay off, that won't just disappear. If they were under the threat of violence before, well that was already illegal anyway so the illegality of the work won't help them there.

The things that will help people looking to leave sex work are things that make leaving easier. Resources that allow them to gradually pick up education while still working as a sex worker, protections from eviction, or from their child being taken away by social services. None of those things require sex work to be illegal and several become harder when it is stigmatized.

And you don't have to take my word for this. Sex workers are strong advocates of their rights and human rights organisations like Amnesty acknowledge that their demands are legitimate.

I thought Sleaze was mostly stuck as a reflection unless actively empowered to come out for short bursts.
